For those on my friends list who like comics and draw comic stuff, Where do you go to get those dynamic poses? Do you just look at other comics you own or is it from your head ( Read more... )

Just go get some old Marvel comics. Preferably drawn by Jack Kirby 'cause he's the man. If you don't want to go poking through the stinky quarter bins of your local comics shop, you might be able to find some of the recent New Gods reprint collections on the shelves at the bookstore ("New Gods", "Mister Miracle", "Forever People", and, absurdly enough, "Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen") for a decently-priced dose of musclebound, balletic beatings; also, Mignola's "Hellboy" channels that. I you go with some Hellboy, I think "The Chained Coffin" is your best bet for action per penny, because it's short stories. This'll let you see some of the visual cliches that work. But "New Gods" or "Fantastic Four" or something like that... that's the raw superhero stuff.

Mostly my dynamic action posing comes from my head. Start with a strong diagonal - horizontals are tranquil, verticals are static, but a diagonal is moving, it's maybe about to fall over. Resist the temptation to balance it by foot placement, make it kinetic. Throw in some torsion if you can - that's dynamic, it shows motion to have the hips and torso out of alignment. Especially if you're drawing a punch or something. Then build the muscle up over it, same as always. If muscle's a problem you might wanna get some bodybuilder mags or break out the anatomy books. My trick is to only really worry about muscles that define the pose and motion and kinda ignore the others - but I'm not a fan of musclebound guys in general.

I'm not too concern with muscles since I'm drawing Ms. Rogue here.
Billy has a shit load of comics but some of the artwork is just horrendous, bad anatomy, bad foreshortening, and just muscley ickiness. And Suzy comics usually don't involve super heroes (except for the Authority and the new artist is fucking awful) or they were bought soley because they feature a hot guy... heeeeey, my new Namor comics might have good stuff in them. n_n

I've drawn a couple sketches since I started looking (then I got distracted by this wierd 8yr old boy love comic I found online. 0_o I feel unclean, but I read every story) And i'm mainly worried that my foreshortening looks beyond awful...deformed is the word I'm looking for.

I'll work on the diagonal thing. I think I'm going to have to draw a bunch of little figure drawings before I actually do anything I'd consider detailing.
I'll have to ask B if he has any of those comics before I tear his room apart.
