Dovetailing on my most recent entry about the virtual journey through my history with menstruation and Feminism, I wanted to leave one last plea for my friends to consider switching to non-disposable feminine hygiene products. The main issue (because the risk is death) is that they're downright dangerous.

I love my reusables. I don't own a cup anymore (Mirena = no real bleeding), but I have some much loved cloth pads and pantiliners. I arrived at them via a chemical allergy to SAP. I'd been using a cup, but you can't use that postpartum. I have a friend who's a pad aficionado and picked out some PP ones with her help. Since Calico has the same issue with SAP, as we found out at the hospital with their disposables, I assume we'll be a cloth pad and cup house when she's older too.

My friend actually was featured on the LunaPads website a while ago when she visited their offices on holiday.

Really? Is that common with Mirena? I haven't had my cycle since before I was pregnant with Sephie, and I attributed most of its recent absence to the fact she still nurses on demand. But I'm also on Mirena, so now I'm wondering if that's part of it, too.

I'm really kicking myself for not buying the Lunapads postpartum kit, because I was miserable for the six weeks or so of bleeding and it didn't help I was wearing these giant maxi pads that made me feel like I was wearing a diaper myself. Heck, I even had disposable undies which made it a little better, but overall, I felt gross and dealt with a lot of heat chafing that I wasn't used to because I hadn't used pads in so long.

That's so cool that your friend was featured! And, out of curiosity, what's SAP?

Go me, forgetting to reply to things this week.

The minimal period is definitely a Mirena thing. I had one before Calico and I didn't have a period for 4 1/2 years. It was pretty great. I'm sure the nursing on demand helps, too.

I ended up getting a bunch from a WAHM that I love and were a great price. I am going to cry when they fall apart because they're like your favourite comfy undies. I was really interested in the LunaPads, but they were out of my price range at the time. I actually think I might end up trying to make my own in the next round.

SAP is super-absorbent polymer, the stuff that turns to gel when you get it wet. It's in disposable diapers, as well.
