Of Menstruation and Empowerment

I want to talk for a moment about the importance of bio-Fem. I'm not sure if that's an actual name for an ideology, but it should be, because science and medicine haven't always been kind to women. Once upon a time, so-called science was used to justify oppression of all flavors, which I mention also because I read this really rad article by Avory ( Read more... )

Really? Wow. The first time I used it, I ended up getting an infection because I didn't know what I was doing. But that was it. I found it so much more convenient to insert than tampons ever were for me. I could never use the cardboard applicators, I had to use the plastic but it still often made me feel like I was going around with a sex toy in my pants or something. I've never noticed the DivaCup.

I'm sorry you had that experience. I haven't had a period since December of 2009, so we'll see what happens when I finally get my cycle back and whether I can use the DivaCup for women who have had children. I'm a little nervous about it, just because I have another LJ friend who is afraid to use it in conjunction with her IUD.

But, at the same time, I have a new supply of Lunapads so at the very least, if I shy away from the Divacup for a while, I'm still covered on the eco/bio-Fem front.

I'm curious, have you ever tried the sea sponges? I haven't, but I heard a lot of women who enjoy the perks of tampons are able to use them. That's next on my list of things to try.
