Part II: Choices

Hogwarts letters. Oh, how I've missed that letterhead.

The envelope felt heavy, a bit heavier than usual...

I got it. Head Girl.

There hasn't been a Slytherin Head Girl in centuries- I looked it up years ago, of course.

My father would be so- fuck.

I suppose I do know what to write, though.

I tried sending an owl to Art, to find out if he'd gotten Head Boy, but I was a bit too excited when I wrote out the envelope; my owl came back looking like she hadn't the faintest idea who I wanted the letter to go to. Either that, or she's still pissed at me. Which is possible too.

Ah, well. I'll see him on Platform 9 3/4, anyway.

Why are all the nice boys gay, though?

Dearest Cousin Melly,

I'm shocked you haven't written me, cousin. Simply shocked. You broke your promise. I was only surprised you made the promise in the first place.

You found out, didn't you? That I was still at Hogwarts? And you knew what that meant, or you thought you did. Well. Let me tell you a little something- it was never a choice that I made, not the way you'll think of it. I didn't set out to screw you over, cousin, it simply...worked out that way.

This will probably be the last you'll hear from me. It's over, Melly. Even if it isn't for me, it is for you.

Keep your nose clean out there at Durmstrang, dear little cousin. You won't hear from me again, but that doesn't mean I won't be there. I've seen enough blood spilled for the name of Nott. Enough.

Tabitha

Sent an owl to my cousin at Durmstrang. Suddenly I understand a lot of things, and I want to make certain she does, too.

I used to think of my future as something already written- just another branch of the Nott family tree, taking no roads that hadn't already been taken a hundred times.

Now I think maybe...there's something else.

I keep looking at that Head Girl badge, and thinking...
