You and Me
Junsu/
DongwoonNon-AU. 608 words.
Cause it's you and me and all of the people
With nothing to do, nothing to lose
And it's you and me and all of the people and
I don't know why I can't keep my eyes off of you
“Hey.”
The sound of the voice makes him freeze, cold dread gripping his veins and heart. Of all people he was expecting to run into, he wasn’t one of the candidates. It takes him a second or ten before he manages to turn around. A smile plastered on his face and an arm raised in a stiff wave.
“Hey,” a pause, “Dongwoon-ah.” Whether the red-haired boy notices his awkwardness, he’ll never know because Dongwoon opts to flash him a blinding smile and occupies the space beside him. Like he knows Junsu won’t say anything about it. Like he knows Junsu can’t and he shouldn’t.
“It’s a surprise to see you here,” Dongwoon’s tone is light and amicable and Junsu watches him sweep his gaze across the river, lights from a distance reflected in his eyes. The younger male glances at him and Junsu drops his eyes immediately and pretends to be looking away. Ignoring the smirk he can see on the other’s face from his peripherals.
“We were bound to meet here someday,” Junsu tries to keep his tone just as carefree but hears it come out all flat and wrong, clearing his throat and giving it another try, “We, uh… used to come here, remember?” His stomach twists when he recalls that day and he hopes Dongwoon won’t pick up on his words. Hopes he has forgotten even though his insides squirm uncomfortably thinking about if he had.
Unfortunately, the redhead nods all too enthusiastically. “Yeah, I remember! It was over there,” a lanky arm comes into his view, narrowly missing his nose, “It was over there where you ki…” The words die in his throat and Junsu feels heat rising in his body, embarrassment and anger. He clenches his hands into fists in his lap.
Awkward silence reigns for approximately three minutes - Junsu giving the younger time to change the subject so as not to be rude - but he feels more and more nervous sitting there so he stands up. Excuse ready on his tongue (“Look what time is it now! Time to practice!” and hopes it’s believable) to validate his departure. And he opens his mouth, ready to say it when Dongwoon looks at him and beats him to the punch.
“Hyung, I’m sorry about what happened two years ago. I didn’t… I was scared and nervous and unsure and--,”
“Don’t worry about it,” Junsu interrupts, voice coming out rougher than he intended it to, mouth dry, “It was a stupid mistake and it happened a long time ago. So just… forget it.” He feels bitter suddenly, annoyed that Dongwoon’s still able to hurt his pride easily after all this while. He turns to leave but a cold hand grabs his and freezes him in his tracks.
“Hyung… Junsu, please, I,” Dongwoon sounds so desperate that it kills Junsu’s urge to snatch his hand away and leave, “It was a mistake. What I did. Me leaving that night. I want to… make it right. Start over.” His eyes stare into his own, silently pleading.
Junsu thinks about it for a while, jaw clenched and brows knitted. Weighing the pros and cons of the situation. Then remembers the saying about second chances and focusing on the desperate look on Dongwoon’s face and caves in. Second chances are good things to give, right?
“Okay,” he says quietly, turning his hand so that he’s gripping the redhead’s instead and sits back down on the bench, “Let’s start over.” He pulls his hand away only to extend it, small smile on his face.
“Hi, I’m Kim Junsu.”
“Son Dongwoon.”
“So Dongwoon-sshi, do you come here often?”
“… hyung.”
