Today is a day to think about the plight of the Roma (aka Gypsies) worldwide and celebrate a people who have endured despite persecution and unlawful imprisonment. Through government edicts to stop all actions involving their lifestyle in many countries the Roma people have kept true to their heritage when others might have conformed. Unlike many minority groups most books written today still do not accurately portray the Roma people nor can any one book accurately do this. Through the many tribes of their people from the Sinti and Romani to the Pikey and others the culture of the people is too diverse to be encompassed in one book but tied so strongly to one another that any book that does not handle them all would fall short of the truth. This diversity has been a detriment to acceptance. Those outside the community don't understand how people so diverse can consider themselves one people or how a people spread across every continent can feel cohesive and uniform. Despite the uncertainty people with in the Roma community feel their people as one people and one culture.
