Oh hey, college has started and right now I don’t even understand my schedule, but oh well. DETAILS, DETAILS.
Since the beginning of the month I have watched some very good movies! Among them is True Grit, which I had zero interest in seeing, but my dad and sister dragged me into it. Oh man, I was totally not prepared by its awesomeness. It had that usual Coen Brothers feel to it, especially the humor, and that’s one of the things that made it so charming. That, and the chemistry of the three main characters was absolutely darling and fabulous. ALL MY LOVE FOR MATTIE, seriously. I want to be that girl when I grow up (though I like my arms just as). So, yeah. That’s a movie I would definitely recommend. All the characters are very flawed, but somehow likable. (Yes, even you, LaBoeuf.)
And a few days ago,
pellucere and I watched Arranged, thanks to f!s, ahahha. It was such a cute movie about a Muslim woman and a Jewish woman who become friends and it’s all very sweet. (Yee, Nasira doing henna art on Rochel’s hand, one of my favorite scenes! Other than gleeface!Nasira with a camera, and Nasira with her adorable dad, oh my goodness, guess who was my favorite character, just guess.) This movie is very slice-of-lifeish and it sort of hits home for me because it's so relatable (except for the arranged marriage part, but all of it is handled fairly well<33). Just-- yeah. Good movie.
On Friday I also watched The Golden Compass with my mom. And, uh, yeah no. I don’t know if it was the actress or the character, but the protagonist was so scowly.
Anyway! I have a meme from
pitseleh !

Kirra - Twelfth House Series by Sharon Shinn.
Oh, I can’t count the number of ways I love Kirra! I started reading the books when I was in middle school and back then there were a lot of other novels with female protagonists who were considered “strong” because they were spunky and hated dresses and wanted to hang with the boys. At the time I was sort of trying to find myself, and I was very put-off that all the “cool girl” characters had to be sort of tomboy-ish. Not that there was anything wrong with that but-it does get a little stifling, and sends the wrong message that awesome girls can’t wear glittery nail polish. :(
Then I read about Kirra! The second book of the series had her as a protagonist, but I totally fell in love with her in the very first novel. She’s the daughter of a rich noble and she LOVES parties and being sociable and dancing and dresses and looking pretty! She’s also loyal and intelligent and can hold her own in a fight and has this TRAGIC love story which she doesn’t end up with the guy of her dreams, but she’s able to LET THAT GO and MOVE ON. (And end up with Donnel, which pleases me, because they are so lovely together too!)
She’s also a shapeshifter. So… YEAH. Kirra’s just all around awesome<3
Kitai- Codex Alera series by Jim Butcher.
At first I didn’t think much of Kitai. I thought she was cool, but stereotypically tsun-tsun for Tavi. It was a little annoying, but I’m glad they got over that phase early. As the series progressed, I ended up loving her more and more. She is so SENSIBLE and COMPETENT and totally able to cross-cultures. I mean, she was willing to dress up as a Marat Ambassador and put her feelings aside because she is aware their relationship could be a potential political fiasco. SHE IS SO COOL. And sexy, imo.
Kulingile - Temeraire series by Naomi Novik
OH GOD HELP ME IF HE IS MY FAVORITE DRAGON IN THE SERIES. He is essentially a bouncing balloon with claws and it is the most adorable thing. Also I love how chill he is and that he doesn’t really understand the concept of bribery. I want him to become the BIGGEST dragon with the BIGGEST crew and have Demane as his captain.
Kate Bishop - Young Avengers
It is Kate fucking Bishop, and this girl gets shit done. (Except Eli. C’MON, KATE.)
Kakashi - Naruto
HAHAHHA. I think I covered my thoughts about Naruto in an
older post, but basically I think Kakashi is a manipulative asshole sometimes. He's competent though, and pretty badass in his own right, but ehhhh.
