God must like Mormons (my Warriors rant of the day)

May 14, 2007 00:42

Either that or some Jazz fan put a curse on the Warriors and the entire Oracle arena tonight. It wasn't just that they lost and i was there firsthand to see their demise. it was the bizarre way in which they lost. And yeah they did play poorly and only got a few of their shots in. And maybe the team and the crowd may have been a little overconfident after they slaughtered the Jazz this past Friday. ..

But the thing that bothered me the most was the mostly apathetic crowd. In a place in which people usually need earplugs to stand the roar of people's cheering, it was eerily calm and quiet. Usually when the crowd gets those free yellow shirts they wave them around their heads like helicopters when the game starts and the players are introduced. I thought i was imagining it, but after the game began, people rarely got up to stand and cheer on their team. For the most part, they just sat in their seats and watched passively. Like it wasn't the playoffs. It actually reminded me of a game that I'd be watching 5 years ago when people just gave up on them halfway through. Like they could care less if the Warriors won.

It wasn't just me: I have proof.

Someone mentioned that the recent crowds that have been watching the Warriors have been rich fuckers who have the ability to out-bid the real Bay Area fans because they have the money and the connections to go to these games (where tickets can start at hundreds of dollars and up for certain seats). Shit, I guess if Snoop and Jessica Alba are going to games, folks who never even liked basketball decided that these games would be a great place to take our their up-scale rich bitch clients. It's now a social phenomenon.

One thing that i realized over these past few weeks is that your energy makes or breaks your success. Whenever i work with my youth i tell them that your energy is contagious -- if one of you is upset, negative or apathetic, it spreads to the entire group. the same goes for a positive energy.

A few of the fans like me were going crazy in the stand. yeah we tried to get people going, but no one else wanted to make a sound. When the Warriors were up, the crowd did stand and cheer, but when they were down, they sat back and talked shit with total bandwagon mentality.

When the warriors were winning at home, everyone in the media pointed out that the home crowd had a lot to do with the warriors winning those games and giving them confidence. as one player from the Jazz mentioned, "the crowd makes it seem like you're playing six guys on the court". and all the Warriors players mentioned that they feed off of that energy.

Halfway through the game tonight, when they were down a point or so, i actually wanted to go home. I was really pissed off and freaked out about the lack of energy in that arena. yeah that sounds hippy and full of shit, but it felt really sterile.

Even the sound guy seemed in on making sure that the warriors would lose. when the warriors were on defense, they would sometimes (but not often) play the "defense" chant music, but when the warriors were on the offense, you could hear a pin drop it was so quiet. they even played the quote-un-quote "mexican hat dance" song when they were on the offense that draws no emotional response from anyone. no one cheered them on. and the sound person refused to put any rousing music on to get the crowd to start chanting in support.

I think the warriors noticed it too. It must have thrown the players up for a loop to feel the lack of support from their usual fans.

As i told my sister, the reason why we lost last night is because the crowd just didn't have the Warriors' back this time.

And yes muhhfukers, i did just do a stupid-ass blog about the fucking golden state warriors. it may be trivial, and yes there are bigger and better things to write about in this world, but who gives a fuck. it's cathartic, and besides -- being a Warriors fan for the past few decades has been a proud yet thankless job.
