Stuck in the middle with you

Saturday morning meant a more leisurely pace to Tristan's day. Instead of rushing out the door last second to get to the shelter before 8am (the staff at the animal hospital prized punctuality), he could manage breakfast, a coffee, and perhaps even the crossword in the newspaper. Aiming to fetch a newspaper from the lobby, Tristan left his hotel room on the fifth floor, wandered to the center of the floor where the elevators were, pressed the down button and entered the first car available to him.

A great rhythmic thumping noise echoed down the hallway, clearly someone covering ground at a run. The noise grew closer and was soon accompanied by a voice shouting "Hold that lift!"

For the briefest of moments, Tristan toyed with the idea of shutting the lift doors just as the other man reached the car. Imagine the look on the poor man's face! But no, amiability won out this morning, and he held his hand between the doors, blocking them open for the stranger to step inside.
