Often, characters on shows turn into ideals when they're confronted with extreme situations. In a sex scene, they turn into porn stars, in an action scene, they turn into Lara Croft. If you do that, you take the hook away.

This. Also, characters need context, I think. A character needs to feel like they came from somewhere, like they have a history. If they don't have a history, there needs to be a reason for that.

And at some point, I want your thoughts on Dollhouse. If you watch enough eps to have Pointed Thoughts. I'll probably watch more this week.

OHRIGHT. You can also ask me five questions! If you feel like it. I'll probably be dull and just end up answering them in chat, because I fail at memes.

1) I'm giving you $2,000 with the strict instructions to spend it on something that is neither useful nor necessary, but that makes you happy. What do you spend the money on?

2) You get to pick: traveling with the Doctor, or traveling with the Master. Who would you really pick? (This is season 3 finale Master, complete with the crazy insane mood-swings and the unpredictability. The Doctor is season 3 finale Ten.)

3) You've written your novel; it turned out exactly the way you wanted it, and now it's time to submit it to a publishing house. Which publishing house would be your very first choice?

4) You get to erase one person from your life. A school teacher, a college professor, one of your parents, relatives or siblings--anyone, but only one. They won't get hurt in the process; you'll just never have met them. Who do you pick?

5) Someone offers you to pay you $1,000 per month for the rest of your life, provided you never eat chocolate again. If you slip and do it anyway, you will have to pay them back in entirety. Would you

I think the context provides the character. Meaning, if you have context, you don't need to worry about reverting to archetypes in extreme situations, because you'd immediately go . . . no. My character wouldn't do that, in this situation. Of course, that's only the case if you have coherent context, not just context you threw in there to make it sound good. (Like, say, a random aunt that never actually showed up. >_>)

Dollhouse. I actually didn't mind the first episode that much. I can see why they changed it. The pilot wasn't very concise, and the first episode made it snappier, more personal. It also generalized the concept a little, but well. That's what you get when you try to shorten the time you need to explain your concept.

Oh, I like your point about a story needing a hook!! Great thought-provoker.

And sure, I'll take 5 questions and this time I will answer them soon(-ish)!

1) What do you enjoy most about writing?

2) The other day, you posted a map of the world with the countries you've visited colored blue. When did you go to the States, which part did you visit, and did you enjoy it?

3) You've saved the life of a millionaire's little son, and the millionaire grants you one wish--anything money can buy. What do you ask for?

4) What would you rather have: a great house that you can call your own, or a great car that's entirely yours? Why?

5) You meet the Doctor, and he offers you one trip, backwards or forwards in time, anywhere in the universe. It can't be within your personal time line--meaning you can't meet yourself, or your parents/relatives/descendants--but everything else is available. Where do you ask him to take you?

Really like the answers to #5. Nodding my head in agreement all the way through there :)

I'm grand at blabbing about writing. Now if I could only do it . . . ;)

Thanks, though! It always seems so perfectly obvious when you type it up, but if you try to do it in your writing, you realize how hard it actually is.

Oh yes. I began mentally applying your comments about honesty and hook to this WIP that's plaguing me at the moment and I'm actually thinking that yes, I am giving something the (eventual) reader can relate to and demand answers and resolution from and despite the fact that only two chapters in and I think I've already managed to write myself into a corner as far as background characterisation goes I'm determined to see it through without compromising anything. Which would massively weaken the story, I think, especially as I'm reasonably sure that no one else has taken this particular tack on characterisation before. All of which makes absolutely no sense unless you're me, lol. See, I can blab too ;)

I really like your answer for number four. And I may come back with proper words in general when I'm less half-awake. As it stands -- questions?

1) How did you and Nina meet? Because I'm curious.

2) If you had to stick one of the big sexuality labels (asexual, bisexual, gay, straight) on the Master/the Doctor respectively, which one would you choose for each of them? Give me a short (or long) reason, and tell me which incarnation of the characters you were thinking of when you chose it.

3) What's harder, writing fic or role playing?

4) What with the big profic vs fanfic discussion fandom is having atm--what do you think? Does "fanfic" even exist, and is it different in quality from "original" fic, or is all fiction fanfiction?

5) What's the perfect meal, for you? I don't mean your favorite food--but imagine you just had a long day, you come home and you're absolutely starving. What are you craving?

The fourth answer makes me grin and the second answer probably amuses me more than it ought to and I sort of appreciate you greatly for that. *is bitchy and very rawr over minor grievances*

But uhm, yes, I'll gladly take questions because why the hell not?

Lol, my Four hate amuses people. I simply have a very distinct dislike for the guy; I'm not entirely sure why. He's an ass.

Questions!

1) In the RTD era of Doctor Who, which character could you have done without? Not "which character do you dislike the most", but which character do you think didn't really fulfill any purpose and could have been dropped?

2) What's your favorite episode? Not of any one television show, but in general. Of all the shows you've seen, which episode stands out to you to be as close to perfect as you can get? Why?

3) Where's your favorite place to be?

4) Do you prefer to play female or male muses? Do you even have a preference? Do you think there's a difference?

5) Who would you run away with? You get to choose between the Doctor (Seven), the Master (Delgado), the Rani, and Romana (Romana II). Who do you choose and why? (And, if you feel like it, bonus question: where do you make them take you?)
