Sherlock Holmes

I just watched the trailer for the new Sherlock Holmes movie on IMDB. (Link goes to YouTube.) Now, I love Hollywood movies, they usually make me happy, and I adore RDJ, who is hot and snarky and a decent enough actor, but. . . they're going to ruin my childhood, aren't they?

What the hell, it is an action film. It's . . . The League of Extraordinary Baker Street Irregulars Goes to Sparta by Way of London 2.

Ooh, Jude Law is hot as Watson, though. I think I just head-cast him.

Jude Law is hot as Watson. And RDJ is hot, too. But he's not Holmes. He's just. . . not. Holmes is tall and skinny and refined and not as spazzy as RDJ. And he doesn't do action. Or women.

This movie is going to confuse the hell out of me.

Yeah, Holmes is tall and long-fingered and hawkish. Someone who is entirely made of angles and manages to pretend he is not gawky, mostly by steepling his fingers a lot and going for Impressive instead.

And he solves cases with the minimum amount of movement. He lounges on pillows and narrates from Baker Street, when he can get away with it.

Still. Law = Watson = approval.

Steepling his fingers, going for Impressive, and not moving. Gawky people only seem awkward and gawky when they move too much, because you realize they're oddly proportioned compared to the rest of the world. As long as they lounge on pillows and smoke pipes, and maybe pluck away at a violin now and again, nobody will notice that they're actually far too tall and long-limbed.

. . . which makes it sound as if David would make a good Holmes. But I actually don't think he would. He'd probably make a more or less decent Holmes, but his face is too expressive. Bill Nighy would probably make a good Holmes--even if he's a bit old.

Well, that's...different. The Seven-Percent-Solution wasn't exactly Sherlock Holmes, either, but Nicol Williamson still made a convincing Holmes. I'm not so sure about Robert Downey Jr.

And, hey, I'm not exactly a prude. *waves Torchwood fan flag* But...kinky bondage in my Sherlock Holmes? *boggles*

Oh, I'm sure Holmes got up to some kinky bondage. But not with women, and totally not in front of a camera. Also, he would not be the one getting cuffed to the bed. Hell no.

I love RDJ, but try as I might, I can't head-cast him as Holmes. It just doesn't work. Actually, I could rather head-cast him as Watson than Holmes.

Your slash goggles are showing :D (Have you seen the Granada TV series?)

Come on, they're Holmes and Watson. Their fake-real apartment in Baker Street in London only has one bed. The only reason Watson went and got married was that nobody would be able to keep up a lasting relationship with Holmes without self-destructing at some point. ;)

And no, I haven't. I'm old skool; I did watch a couple of movies, but most of my Sherlock Holmes canon knowledge stems from having read the books and short stories as a kid. Which is why this new movie will confuse the hell out of me. Sherlock Holmes, running? Jumping out of windows? Acknowledging the presence of women who aren't Mrs. Hudson or clients? Madness!

I never read the books yet *hides* but I think I'll love this movie!

Don't read them before you've seen the movie, if you want to go see it. The two versions just don't go together at all.

I'll probably enjoy the movie, too. Except for the bits when I'll remember that it's a Sherlock Holmes movie, and I'll go BUT BUT BUT. RDJ =/= Holmes. >_>
