Ahaha, Jack. I love him. Why? BECAUSE HE'S AWESOME xD. Okay, on a more serious note: I like him in Doctor Who s1 because he brings some fun and wit into the show - Nine and Rose are great, but they're both so extremely good and not at all vain or self-important or whatever. Jack's introduced in an episode where he almost kills off all of humanity because he wanted to make some profit. EXTREMELY COOL.
In DW s3, he's awesome, too, because he has these great dynamics with Ten. I thought his role of the broken but undefeated freak of nature chained up in the basement a little over the top, but he did pull it off with grace, so that's okay.
Also, I mean, he's bi. And great to look at. What's not to like?
2) Is he/she important to the general plot?
In DW, hmm... depends. Of course when he shows up, he's given a role in the plot, but since he's a side character in DW, he's not such a major factor where the general plot is concerned. In Torchwood, well, he's the main male character, so I'd say yeah ;).
3) Can you relate to this character at all? Do they grip you emotionally?
In Torchwood, yeah. I love his angst in Torchwood. All on his lonesome, poor Jack. In DW... not so much. Not saying he's no fun in DW; he's great fun, and he makes the show more interesting. But his character is portrayed in too light a tone for me in DW to actually relate to him in a deeper, emotional way.
Of course, that's a little different as soon as he shows up in s3, because that's post-Torchwood s1 for him. But still, as soon as the Doctor shows up, Jack's back to his space cowboy role. Which is cool, but, you know. Not that emotionally gripping.
4) How much do you like the fandom that this character comes from?
I think I like DW fandom. It has a big gen population, which is new for me, but which is, I think, a good thing. Also, it's old, and older fandoms aren't as prone to wank as younger ones (not saying there's no wank in DW - *cough* Rose Army *cough* - but when I compare it to, let's say, House, it's a lot quieter). I haven't been in this fandom for very long, but so far, everyone has been really nice.
5) Do you ship this character with any other character? Or, are you particularly intrigued by their relationship with any other character(s)? (romance-wise or platonic)
Ten/Jack is an awesome pairing. Their dynamics are great. Also, I like the 9/Rose/Jack threesome pairing they had in s1. It was sweet :). Then there's the awesome Jack Harkness/Jack Harkness pairing from that one Torchwood episode, which is just so Romeo-and-Juliet star-crossed lovers that you can't not like it. But hey, this is Jack. No quaint little categories for him, right? xD
6) Is there anything about the character you would change?
Yeah. In DW, I'd give him more depth. In Torchwood, I'd make him less military. Jack is so not military. He likes to pretend he is, but hell, he's not. I don't really think that the dom-moments he has with Ianto are that much IC. They work, but I like to see him more vulnerable and less in command.
7) If you were in the fandom with this character or knew this character in real life, how do you see yourself interacting with him/her? (Would you get along well? Fall in love with? Dislike? Friendly rivalry? etc etc)
Haha, Jack would totally embarrass me. I'd be so awkward around him. I'd probably ask the Doctor to let me hide in the TARDIS attic when Jack's around ;D.
8) Does this character make the cut as one of your all time favorites (if you like) or least favorites?
I guess so. He's Jack Harkness, you know? I knew him before I discovered Doctor Who, and that even though he's only in maybe 5 or 10 episodes. He's a legend. That's awesome.
9) Would you hype up this character (if you like) or warn about (if you dislike) to someone whose new to the fandom?
Haha, totally. "You gotta watch this! John Barrowman's in it! He's hot! And gay!"
10) Is this character popular with the fanbase?
Oh boy is he ever.
