I was gonna post the following in a thread on Mission Mission, but I think it can stand on it's own. My position: I've lived in this neighborhood for 4 years and I'm completely neutral on this. I think the people arguing are uglier than the store.
The thing keeping me from putting any effort behind blocking AA is it stanks of hypocrisy. Weston Wear is a line carried in Macy's of all chains and it replaced an independent bookstore on Valencia. Where was the frakkin' outrage then? Crickets... that was the sound of dissent on that one.
I think the opposition has nothing to do with 'formula retail'. It has to do with the fact that all the new yuppie stores, restaurants and coffee shops draw the line at kids with just enough pennies to by a skanky dress coming in and not having any left over to spend on a $100 fanny pack at 5 and Diamond. Or they fear the street looking like one of AA's print ads and scaring Buffy and Thad away from the Mission's bourgeois bubble.
I'm sick of people crying gentrification from the roof of Medjool. Douchebuckets opened up pandora's box onto Valencia and now complain about the blowback when it doesn't go 100% their way. Boo-fucking-hoo. I can't get behind that.
I'm not a fan of American Apparel but I can't stand hypocritical crybabies more than any one store.
