OH YES they finally came to Portland. It was amazing. I took some craptacular pictures with my phone, but I was sitting kinda far back so I dunno if they're worth posting, and I still gotta get them off the phone. Even though it was pretty far back my seat was good, 'cause I was in the third row of the side-balcony thing and my seat was on the aisle, so there was NO freakingly tall dude standing in front of me. It was sweet.
The opening band was Trans Am which is this kinda weird industrial-ish band. They were good. They played like four songs in half an hour, which was kind of a trend through the whole evening, actually. Then Tu came on, which is the bassist and the drummer from King Crimson! (I do not know their names.) I had NO idea who the supporting acts were so this was a very nice surprise. Their set was basically them fucking around with their instruments over weird samples. They sampled that "leave britney spears alone!!" thing, it was funny.
Tool played Jambi (yay!), Stinkfist (this was fucking awesome, they added a big crazy instrumental part in the middle, I think I almost literally had an orgasm), then I think 46 & 2, Rosetta Stoned (AWESOME), Schism, Flood was somewhere in here-- unfortunately the only song they played off of Undertow. I really wanted to hear Sober, however, seeing Flood live was so completely fucking amazing... I think I can forgive them. I think this was my favorite song they played. I think maybe a lot of people there didn't recognize it 'cause I was all "WOOHOOOO" and everyone else was just kinda standing there. Then they took a loong break while the lights went all crazy and shit. Like multicolored spotlights going over the crowd. When it shined right on you it was like a big circle of beams. It was cool but I was also partially blinded. I wish I had thought to take a picture of that, it was really cool. Then they did Wings for Marie, which isn't one of my favorites off 10,000 Days, but it was AMAZING live (which I suspected it would be), and they had an amazing light show with it. It was all crisscrossing laser beams kinda and then they fanned out and spun in circles and you could see the smoke filtering through them, so it was like this big sheet of green clouds. Definitely the best visual effects I've seen. This was the only song I sat down for and just watched 'cause my feet hurt and the lights were really really good, and there was no one in front of me. It might have been my favorite part. Then I stood up again 'cause they brought out a djembe and that got me excited. They started playing Lateralus (which is REALLY FUCKING GOOD live) and then in the middle of it the guys from King Crimson came out again and it was pretty much just Danny Carey and that drummer guy (what is his name!) duking it out for awhile. It was BRILLIANT to watch. And then he sadly went away and they closed with Vicarious. There was no encore. :(
I'm surprised they didn't play Aenima. That's the other one I really would have liked to have heard. It was REALLY REALLY good overall, though. I can still sort of hear because I was sitting so far from the stage and the speakers, it was still really loud though. I could feel my ORGANS vibrating. The venue was really nice, I'd never been there before.
Tool, I officially forgive you for not coming to Portland for so long! I will not kidnap and torture your families.
I have class in the morning. Wah. Must go to bed.
