college crap

I went and took college placement tests yesterday... I got a 98 on reading, 99 on writing (which is a perfect score, the lady told me), aand a 55 on math. I got placed in Introductory Algebra, which is higher than I was expecting, but the credits from that class still aren't transferrable.

So I went and saw the advisor, but I couldn't really focus on what he was saying because my period chose that moment to start and I was having excruciating cramps. But a few hundred mg of ibuprofen and a nap later, I looked at the papers he gave me and there is an associate of arts transfer degree you can get at Portland Community College which I am thinking of doing. Then I could transfer to a four-year college as a junior and get my BA there. The degree is 90 credits, and at $68 per credit the tuition would total $6,120. As opposed to two years at a four-year university, which would be in the neighborhood of $40,000. And neither of those numbers are figuring in books and fees and gas and crap like that.

Well, at ~$3,000 a year I could probably work a minimum wage part-time job and still afford it (since I would be living at home, and therefore wouldn't have many expenses), which would take some of the strain off my parents... might be able to get scholarships or grants or something as well, but most of those you have to be enrolled for two semesters to qualify for, so I haven't researched it that much yet. Of course, for this plan to work I have to actually get a job. NO FUN. But I don't think my parents can afford to send both me and my sister to college at the same time, even if I'm only going to community college. I guess I have to grow up sometime. It's also hard to get a job here as a minor... phooey. I should probably get my driver's lisence too but I do not want to! You have to drive through the pass to get to the campus. THE PASS IS SCARY. The campus is nice, however.

I am just going to take one class this summer to kind of ease into it, since I haven't been to school since 5th grade. But I'm kind of glad I never had to go to high school. It sounds shitty. And I'm not behind on anything aside from science and math, which I can catch up. Hell, I'm ahead of the curve on a lot of subjects... going to college a year early... I think I did okay. But I'm not self-diciplined anymore; I need to go back to school.

I can go see the advisor again before the fall semester, when I have a better idea of what I want to be doing. And what my financial situation is. I might be able to get a job before the summer's out... I don't know
