First day of school

Aug 16, 2007 08:00

I could barely sleep last night. This morning I woke up 15 minutes before the alarm goes off (at 6:30 in the freakin morning). My stomach already has butterflies and my mind is racing with everything I need to remember to do. I pace a little bit and finally go in there to wake up the big kid. He's giggling and hiding under his covers.

Thats right its Calebs first day of school, which is much harder on the parent than the child. But here it goes.. Ok, lets think here, he needs breakfast and uh.. he likes to watch cartoons to wake up, and I gotta get his teeth brushed, "hurry up and eat so I can brush your teeth", and "where's your backpack?" "I dont know" ..great. Ok, found it, "you want your hair spiked? well ok, we got a minute. Get your shoes on."

This is it, wipe the toothpaste off his cheek, tell him you love him and that hes gonna do great. The other parents are here and all of a sudden I feel like I should have dressed up for the occasion. None of the kids want to say good morning regardless of the moms persuasion.

The bus is here and I almost get choked up. He gets on with the other kids without even looking back. The other parents go back into their houses and I solemnly walk back home (as if hes gonna be gone for more than three hours). Now all thats left is his breakfast dishes, the bitter taste of a cigarette I had after he left, and the low hum of the cartoon network.

What a day, and its only 7:30 in the morning!
