Word. And even though I'm glad Dudley shows growth, I'm rather pissed off how JKR NEVER has Harry making painful growth, he just waits for others to bend to him, which is the most unbelievably lazy thing to do as a writer of a bildungsroman.

Exactly. JKR seems to think that character growth equals realizing that the sun shines out of Harry's butt and that he is always right, he doesn't need any proof or logical arguments, his word is law.
And in any argument the other person has to come to Harry groveling and begging for forgiveness. When has Harry ever truly apologized to anybody? Never. And that's even though he might not start the fight, he sure as hell doesn't help resolve it and throws in some digs whenever he can (insulting Seamus' mother, telling Ron he just wants a scar, telling him to leave).

I absolutely DESPISE the fact though that she calls him the "new, improved Percy".

If the new, improved Percy also always falls in line with the motto of the Weasleys that Arthur can do no wrong, then I rather have the old, outdated Percy back. Percy's big mistake was not believing in the ministry, but rather saying what nobody wanted to hear. That Arthur is not too noble or too much of a Muggle fan to not take or get any promotions, but because he's incompetent and a joke, not to mention corrupt (taking bribes, fixing things, breaking the laws he wrote, ect.). Again the "good" side doesn't have to apologize even though Arthur was just as in the wrong in this argument.

Also in both of these cases, even when the other person tries to make amends before, but not apologizing or kissing ass, they are completely rebuked. Ron was still talking to Harry in GoF, even showing that he was worried when he wasn't in bed. And what does he get? A badge hurled at his head and insulted.
And what did Percy get when he came to the Burrow at Christmas in HBP? Icy glares and mushed parshnip thrown at him.
