ok, so pretty much your hair sounds exactly like mine, so having it long is great...
problem is, while youre growing it out, it looks shit.
so what i suggest is wearing a hat, and not cutting it no matter how bad it looks.
and then by the tiem you get it down to your shoulders (which i think would suit) you can cut it however you want it.

also...
if its "slightly" curly like you say, then it is indeed exactly like mine.
get a slimline hair straightener (i recommend remington, ceramic only!)
and some good product.
if you cant straighten it, put some product in it.
you should get something like, wax, or something that clumps your hair...
no gel!
