I worked all last weekend in order to support a software conversion occurring within another group. On Sunday, E text paged me thanking me for all the hard work and telling me that I could have this Friday off on him, which would give me a 4 day weekend due to the holiday on Monday. What he doesn't understand is that I had planned on working all this weekend too in order to meet a deadline because, even though I had plenty of time to complete this project, so many new projects and emergencies crept up that I have had no time at all to work on it. So now, I am putting what I once estimated would take me two months worth of work into two days and a weekend.
The day before yesterday, I informed him of the fact that I would be working all this weekend, and that my project was due Tuesday. His response: "Well... then take Tuesday off too". He knows I can't do that. The project is due Tuesday. In addition, after hearing of the work I will be doing this weekend he didn't even bother to offer any additional compensation.
What this boils down to is me working close to 20 hours last weekend, and me working close to 45 this extended weekend and for all of that he is giving me last Friday off, and this Tuesday off (actually Wednesday because I will have to work Tuesday in order to turn in the project). In my point of view it works like this. These are weekend hours, and therefore, are worth more than regular hours. In addition, they are hours BEYOND the standard 80 hour work week we are required to put in. That means, in my opinion, these hours should be worth 2.5 times the normal hour. That means I am owed 162.5 hours, or approximately 20 days. Even at standard overtime rates of 1.5 times the normal hour, I am owed 97.5 hours or approximately 12 days. Even at a one to one ratio I am owed 65 hours or approximately 8 days worth of comp. time. I am getting two. Maybe three if he decides to be nice. And all of these days are scattered, not contiguous, which means that the only thing they are good for is performing domestic duties that I didn't do because of the fact that I was working so much.
The other thing that really gets me about this project is that my piece is due on Sept 4th. However, the other half of the project (which my piece will do absolutely NOTHING without... in fact I am not even able to fully test my half until the other half is finished) is not due until the beginning of October. Why is it that I have to rush and work so many overtime hours, when it really doesn't matter if I get it done by the due date since no one will be able to use it any how? To make matters worse, the actual system this project is designed to interact with cannot roll their code into production until early December.
On top of all that... I really dislike this project, which makes it hard to stay focused on. It is massively complicated with legacy systems, bad data formatting, and developers who don't know the system enough to be able to lend a helping hand.
