"Ah, don't be shy, Origami! You can help yourself to the snacks too, and there are drinks if you get thirsty!"
"Uh...you can call me Ivan."
"Right, Ivan!" Keith stifles a yawn. "I'm sorry, Ivan, I was so happy you were coming over that I barely had any sleep. I spent all day getting ready! Well, except for the part where we had to stop that heist."
Ivan eyes Keith suspiciously, but there's no trace of sarcasm in Keith's voice. He's actually delighted to have Ivan over. Ivan can't really understand it, but he's never been great with people anyway. He just hopes that Keith enjoys the series - he's picked the most shounen series that he can think of.
"Don't worry, Ivan! I'm sure that the excitement of this show will keep me awake!"
Ivan nods, and settles in to watch the adventures of Kamina and Simon for the third time, but Keith's sofa is so soft and comfortable that he can't really bring himself to pay attention. Just as he's about to doze off, he hears a thumping noise. It sounds like something is hitting the back of the sofa.
Ivan turns around, hesitantly, and he appears to have sprouted a furry tail.
Ivan's eyes widen in shock, and he jerks upright, patting the sides of his head frantically. The ears are there too, furry and pendulous. He leans back into the sofa, futilely trying to hide his tail, and tries to concentrate but he just can't change back. God, Keith has probably noticed by now, he must think Ivan's the worst hero ever. He struggles to calm down before he hyperventilates from stress.
Keith reaches over to ruffle Ivan's hair reassuringly, and his hand falters as he touches Ivan's dog ears. He takes a closer look, surprised at what he sees.
"I didn't know you could change your form," Keith says. Ivan braces himself - he's dealt with revulsion so many times in the academy, what's one more person - but he's utterly unprepared for what Keith says next.
"May I touch your ears? They're beautiful!"
Ivan stammers in disbelief, and somehow manages to choke out a "yes".
"You're truly incredible, Ivan!" Keith exclaims, and Ivan wants to object, but Keith's hand moves up to scratch behind his floppy ears, and he suddenly can't remember what he wanted to say.
They continue watching the show - they're nearly at episode eight, and then it'll be time to switch discs again. Just as the episode starts, Ivan leans closer, resting his head on Keith's warm shoulder, and Keith reaches up to stroke the fur on Ivan's ears.
Ivan relaxes into the soothing touch, the unthinking acceptance that Keith offers, and his tail beats a steady rhythm against the sofa.
The fur's probably tickling Keith, but Keith doesn't seem to mind.
