A brick wall.
Grandma freaks when she finds out, of course. Kaede sits in the kitchen, nursing her hand (the skin is broken and bleeding, but not as bad as it should be considering she just PUNCHED THROUGH A WALL), as Grandma paces back and forth in front of the stove on the phone with Kaede's father, hissing things Kaede can't quite make out. Something about it always being Kotetsu's fault, and how had she ever let him marry her daughter, anyways? Kaede doesn't even try to make sense of this; Grandma has always been a little weird, and finding out your granddaughter is a NEXT must come as a shock.
Kaede herself still isn't sure what she thinks about it all, except that, in some strange way, it feels right.
It's not long before her father bursts through the doorway and sweeps her up into his arms all in one motion, lifting her so high her feet dangle inches off the floor. His cellphone clatters to the floor, Grandma's voice squawking in stereo now. His shoulders are shaking, and at first she thinks he's crying, but then he pulls back and looks at her and she can see he's laughing, brown eyes crinkling up at the corners and grin so wide it looks like it must hurt.
"I'm so proud of you, kiddo," he says, and Kaede thinks to herself, You're proud of me punching my hand through a wall because Yao-Li was teasing me about my hair? But before she can say anything he kisses her on the forehead and then sets her back on the ground, hands on her shoulders, beaming down at her. "Guess it must run in the family."
Kaede thinks, What?
Grandma starts screeching again.
Daddy's eyes widen. "Oh, crap," he says.
Which is how Kaede finds out her father is a superhero.
