Our Trip to Staple! 2010 Part 9

Greetings From Wonderland by Grant Sutherland  http://www.greetingsfromwonderland.com/

Grant wasn't scheduled to attend Staple! this year, nor was he expected by any of the attendees, but he made it nonetheless.  I’m glad he did, because I got to be introduced to his comic strip “Greetings From Wonderland”, which is an ongoing story about the fictional Wonderland Animation Studios.

Monsters of Louisiana by The Baton Rouge Cartoonist Society www.comicspace.com/brcs

The Monsters of Louisiana micro-mini (it’s only 3” x 3”) was published by the BRCS and debuted at the 2006 Louisiana Book Festival.  It is page after page of monsters drawn by such great artists as Shane Champagne, Robert Bienvenu, Erik Van Buren, Ann Weber and many others.  My favorite was Zydeco Zombie! A real treasure find!

A.D. New Orleans After the Deluge  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A.D.:_New_Orleans_After_the_Deluge

Leo, one of the “stars” of this book, was at Staple! selling Josh Neufeld’s hardcover edition.  He was a local music zine publisher and worked with mentally challenged youth at the time.  Leo lost his comic book collection in the catastrophe, and his story is recounted in narrative art format.  He’s the guy in the hat on the cover.

A.D. is a graphic novel by cartoonist Josh Neufeld that tells the stories of a handful of real-life New Orleans residents and their experiences during and after Hurricane Katrina.  It’s a sad and beautiful book.

Jason Neulander - The Intergalactic Nemesis  http://www.theintergalacticnemesis.com/

There was also a "living comic book" version of The Intergalactic Nemesis, a radio drama that got its start as a lark at Little City Espresso Bar and Cafe in Austin back in 1996. Jason Neulander is the producer, director, and co-creator of The Intergalactic Nemesis. Unfortunately we could not stay to see it because we needed to get back to San Antonio.
