Title: Welcome to the Family
Author: szm
Rating: G
Pairing: Jack/Ianto
Summary: Ianto's mother has decided to stay for a while, but why?
“Ianto?” asked Jack, sitting at his desk with his head in his hands. “How long do you think your Mother is likely to stay?”
“Well not to say ‘I told you so’ but you were the one who offered to let her stay in the Hub. I was against it,” replied Ianto closing the office door behind him.
Jack groaned. “I meant her, not her and five staff members. I thought it’d be a few days, maybe a week. She’s been here over two weeks now.”
“She’ll be here until Rhiannon agrees to let her see the kids - which will be a cold afternoon in never. Or until she springs whatever it is she’s planning on me,” said Ianto calmly.
“How do you know she's planning something about you?” asked Jack raising his head.
Ianto placed the coffee he was carrying next to Jack and Jack gave him a grateful smile which Ianto couldn’t help but return. “Dad’s not with her, which means it’s something to do with me or Rhiannon that he doesn’t agree with. Dad insisted we grew up on earth but since we are now adults we can ‘decide for ourselves’ apparently. If she wasn’t planning anything Dad would have come to see Rhi.”
Jack took a sip of the coffee. “Your Mum and sister don’t get on then.”
Ianto winced. “Mum didn’t approve of Jonny. Rhi didn’t take it well. They don’t talk.”
Jack looked concerned. “She approves of me, right?”
“Well she hasn’t tried to vaporize you,” Ianto replied deadpan. Jack was just about to ask if Ianto was joking when the ten foot reptilian who followed Ianto’s mother around marched through the door and took up station next to it.
“All hail!” he announced in a clear, ringing and above all loud voice. “The Tsherii Morshantil, Empress of the Nine Su…”
“Oh for crying out loud!” interrupted Jack, jumping up and stalking towards the herald. “We know she’s been here for two weeks. Do you still have to do that?”
Ianto did a not very good job of hiding his smirk. “It’s his job Jack, let him do it.”
The herald looked at Ianto confused for a second then opened his mouth and bellowed. “All Hail! The Ianto Jones, prince of the…” He trailed off under the force of Ianto’s glare. He looked about as sheepish as it was possible for a ten foot lizard to look. Which as it turned out was quite a lot.
“There’s no need to start that,” said Ianto coldly.
“It’s his job darling, let him do it,” said Ianto’s Mother as she swept thought the door, past Jack and Ianto and settled into Jack’s chair. She waved a hand at the herald who looked very pleased to be able to leave.
Ianto turned his glare on his mother, but it didn’t seem to have any effect. “I gave up my titles when…” he glanced at Jack and didn’t elaborate.
“You had titles?” asked Jack with some glee.
“He still has,” said Ianto’s Mother, ignoring her son and speaking directly to Jack. “One can’t simply ‘give them up’.”
“Tell that to Rhiannon,” mumbled Ianto under his breath.
His Mother shot him a sharp look. “Don’t mumble, darling. It’s a sign of poor upbringing. Anyway, we need to talk about the wedding.”
“What wedding?” asked Jack despite Ianto’s frantic signs for him to shut up.
“Why yours and Ianto’s of course,” she replied as if stating the obvious. “Now, we really can’t have it on earth. The Nedlemone simply won’t travel that far.”
Jack looked over at Ianto who was just staring open mouthed at his mother. “Mam, are you trying to marry me off again
“Again,” asked Jack suspiciously. “What do you mean again?”
“He’s not who I would have picked for you I’ll admit. But you do seem to be rather fond of him,” said Ianto’s mother airily. “I’m sure the council won’t have any insurmountable objections.”
“Why wouldn’t you have picked me?” asked Jack but no-one was listening.
“Mam, didn’t you learn with Rhiannon? You don’t get to pick for us.”
“I’m not,” said his mother reasonably. “You picked Jack. Aesthetically I can’t fault your taste.”
Ianto pinched the bridge of his nose. “I’m not going to marry Jack.”
“Why not?” asked Jack and his mother together.
Ianto looked harassed. “Do you want to marry me?” he snapped at Jack.
“Well?” asked Ianto’s mother before Jack had time to reply. Fixing him with a withering look.
“Yes, no…. Maybe?” replied Jack trying to please both mother and son.
“See,” said Ianto’s mother triumphantly.
“Mam…” said Ianto with a long suffering sigh.
Just then the rift alarm began to wail. Jack threw a silent thanks to the rift; alien invasion had to be better than this.
Jack and Ianto raced down to the main Hub. Gwen threw Ianto a gun.
“Queen St. Something big. Let’s get going.” She ran towards the cog door which was already opening.
“Herald,” shouted Ianto. “Get the Empress downstairs and keep her safe.”
Jack wasn’t entirely sure where the ten foot lizard appeared from. But he held out his hand for Ianto’s mother. She took it and they walked towards the archives.
“Ianto,” she called over her shoulder. “We’ll talk about this when I get back.”
Ianto glared at Jack, which Jack felt was unfair. “We are never talking about this again,” he said before hurrying after Gwen.

Ianto and Gwen went straight home after the alien exploded over them and most of Queen St. Jack had escaped the slime but waiting in his office was Ianto’s mother wearing a determined expression.
Jack would have preferred the slime. Then again maybe not, it did smell of rotting fish.
“Ah, Jack, just borrowing your desk. Do you have a large family?”
“What?” asked Jack feeling a little muddle headed. He would have much rather gone home with Ianto, but Ianto was in a Mood.
“For the seating arrangements, for the wedding,” she looked at him like he was the one making no sense.
“Erm…” Jack said. “Ianto is pretty against the idea.”
She stood and walked over to Jack smiling like a shark. She patted his face. “I’m sure you’ll talk him round dear. Now I’m off to bed. Do try not to set your little alarms off won’t you? I’m an absolute terror without my sleep.”
Jack watched her walk out of the office for the first time ever at a loss for words. She turned and smirked at him, disturbingly like Ianto and said. “Welcome to the family.”
