I watched Sharkwater yesterday.
I spent my breaks today trying to find out just how much in that movie is true.
I am appalled. Approximatel 100 mio sharks die each year for their fins so that shark fin soup can be made out of them. Except they don't really add to the taste, only the texture.
They cut off all 4 fins and then just drop the sharks back into the ocean, where they suffocate or are eaten by other animals.
Oh, and the long lining that is used? Kills albatrosses, sea turtles and whatever else is interested in miles and miles of lines to which baited hooks are attached. Flipper in your tuna sucks, but who cares about dead sharks, birds and turtles, huh?
It's really sad that sharks are not cute like tigers or pandas - in that case, nobody would tolerate what's being done to them nowadays.
It's not that I wasn't aware of the whole thing before... I just didn't know that we were talking 100 Million sharks a year! I thought it was somewhere around a thousand or something like that.
China can go on sending 12 year olds to the Olympics and get every single gold medal for all I care. If they just stopped the goddamn shark fin soup thing.
