No kidding. My fanfic concept portrays the American wizarding world as a lot like Britain's, but has a far more efficient and semi-fascistic Ministry running things.
My character would be an eleven year-old "Guardian", a specially-trained magic knight-type wizard who was trained from a young age to, essentially, serve as a member of the American Ministry's elite arm(think Aurors, but the elite of them and "Black Ops", so to speak). He and his grandparents(long story) would be dispatched to Britain as "transplants" and my character would wind up enrolling in Hogwarts as a means of serving as the American Ministry's eyes and ears in regards to the Voldemort Crisis. After all, as JKR said, Voldemort did have his eyes on the States.
Over the years, said character's training as a Guardian and the more traditional wizarding school of Hogwarts would clash and, ultimately, he would become more of an Anti-Hero. After the end of the first seven books, the sequels would revolve around his continued duties as a Guardian and serve to flesh out America's wizarding world...

Tezcatlipoca is also a national hero, but he's an imperialistic warmonger who lead the Wizarding States during her darkest hours. He lead the crusades across the Americas and all the way to Japan and Oceania, forming a massive, semi-democratic magical empire with its capital built over the Panama Canal. Thanks to a Hispanic majority and Quetzalcoatl, segregation was never a problem and racism is almost gone in the UWSA. However, in order to keep the people happy and prosperous, the magical populace of the UWSA uses Muggles to keep themselves well-off, no matter what might happen to the Muggles, often keeping them trapped in poverty while the wizards enjoy their decadent penthouses in Rio or Mexico City.
Schools would be very decentralized, running across the empire, with the largest being Quetzalcoatl's with its large, multinational attendance.
For the HEwrite, Q's school is considered number 2 with Hogwarts having slipped thanks to poor leadership and young teachers. Number one is the Magical University of Baghdad.
