I'm back. More importantly, so are the Pumpkins.
I saw them last night, the second night of the Virgin Festival. I came back with my pockets significantly lighter, an Aiden CD, 2 Pumpkins shirts, and a messenger bag, and a CRAPLOAD of awesome memories.
They came on at 8:30, and I am proud to say that I was in the mosh pit moshing with the best of them. Got kicked in the head a few times by crowd surfers, and hit on by some random Pakistani guy from New York. I told him my name was Rory, I was here with some friends who were up seeing Velvet Revolver at the other stage, and I had a boyfriend. Which didn't stop him hitting on me. Damn. Oh well.
Anyway, the set:
United States---song from the new album, this opened up the set. It was truly awesome because it's got a really long intro with crazy drum solo--thank you Jimmy Chamberlin you rock!--and then finally gets to the singing, by which time I was bursting out of my skin with excitement.
Today---one of their best-known songs, a huge cheer went up when they played this. Awesome.
Stand Inside Your Love---one of my all-time favorite Pumpkin songs, from the underappreciated MACHINA album
Zero---OH MY GOD THIS WAS FUCKING AMAZING. I've never screamed so loud in my life. And there's this one line where it goes "Wanna go for a ride?" and Billy Corgan dropped out on the vocals and let the crowd scream it.
Hummer---from Siamese Dream, with the most beautiful guitar solo
Doomsday Clock---another one from the new album, very high energy and awesome.
Random instrumental track I didn't know
Death From Above---new song, not released on the Zeigeist album, but very very cool. And Billy Corgan sang like an angel. God he's got such a nasty whiny voice. I love it!
Starla---actually a B-side released on the compilation Pisces Iscariot. He introduced this one by saying he had written it during a period when he was doing a lot of mushrooms, and then turned around and said, "Can you say that, Jimmy?" Jimmy Chamberlin got kicked out of the band after Mellon Collie was released for drug use, but is back now, thank heaven. So that was hilarious. And apparently this song sounds really good if you're on mushrooms, according to Billy C. The song got created because he met this girl a club whose name was Starla, and he thought that would be a great name for a song. Then he ran into her again a year later, and asked if she'd heard the song they'd named for her. And she said, "Well, actually my name's Darla, but you know, Starla, Darla, it's all good." But the song is amazing, anyway.
To Sheila---beautiful slow love song from Adore
1979---another of my favorites
Bullet With Butterfly Wings---Oh yeah, baby! This rocked OUT. Awesome beyond awesome, I'm telling you.
Tarantula---again, from the new album. Fantastic stuff.
Tonight, Tonight---beautiful epic song. The recording has like a 40-piece orchestra, because Billy C. is famous for going absolutely all out on the recordings. Obviously couldn't drag in an orchestra for V. Fest, but it was awesome anyway. Having a huge ass crowd singing along makes up for it, I guess.
That's the Way (My Love Is)---new single. Hooray for love songs. They make me so happy, even though I'm not in love and never have been.
Heavy Metal Machine---kind of a tradition to end with this baby. It was awesome, like everything else.
And that was it. I really wish they had played Cherub Rock, Disarm, and Mayonaise, but hey, I'm glad with what I got. I am so incredibly happy. I can die happy.
And a HUGE HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY to Nello and Dorrie, who turned 18 and 17, respectively, yesterday! I hope you had great days!
