Nice twist with Pike's protegee--I wasn't expecting it and enjoyed being surprised. My heart broke along with Pike's after McCoy's transmission. He is just so lonely and it's hard to see a solution to that.
Frankly, I was getting second thoughts about it all so I decided to go ahead with it once I had at least the first part fully done :) The rest sits here and will be polished tonight.
I agree with anruiukimi. The bit about SpockPrime makes me so sad -- SpockPrime and Pike usually go so well together in fic, and I was sorry to see it end on such a sour note. I also really want to see McCoy's face if/when he finds out about the original threesome.
I really tried with Pike and SpockPrime, but the characters topped me. Spock wanted too much. He shared with the one man who he thought would understand, and damn if Pike doesn't, but the mind meld was just not possible because of McCoy's position to Spock, so Pike had to say no - something Spock didn't expect, who sees Pike if not as easy, then at least not as exclusive in his choices of lovers.

Thanks for the comment! :) More in 12 hours or so.
I'm glad I remembered to check your livejournal page! I actually don't mind having it spread out across 4 days -- if the story were all here right now I would probably gorge on it and not fully appreciate the details. As it is, I just read it twice in a row.
Very intriguing tidbits from SpockPrime -- I was especially delighted by him being in a triad with McCoy and Kirk in the original timeline. I love that that threesome as well.... I am glad to get a deeper characterization of SpockPrime in this chapter, sad though it is. It is really too bad that he and Pike can't meld, that would have been amazing.
Yes, the meld was just not possible, much as Spock wanted it. I love the TOS threesome which is *couch* canon for me, so I wanted to bring the idea in here :)
And you're making me wait for the other three parts?!?! *whimpers and claws at the internet*
I'll do my best to be patient, and it's made a lot easier for how well this one part in particular stands on its own. Pike's loneliness is so heartbreaking in this part, even though his reasons for keeping to himself (McCoy, McCoy, McCoy *g*) shine through that. His reaction to McCoy's hot-as-fuck transmission was painfully intense, to the point that I was ready to beg for all narrative logic to be thrown aside - just get McCoy back on Earth NOW so they can be together. Especially when I can picture McCoy's wounded reaction to that short "Miss you too" so damn well.
Pike's interactions with Spock Prime were also wonderfully done, I love how Pike comes to both appreciate and resent Spock as someone who could theoretically keep his lovers safe and just isn't doing enough to do so. And the tension of that almost-meld was downright electric - love the way you played that darker edge, Spock almost taking what he wants and Pike having to

I'm sorry but I didn't even manage to fully polish the monster yet :) (As good as done, but even posting takes a lot of time as I set the italics manually in the code.)
Yeah, lots of Pike/McCoy here :) And it will remain a steady undercurrent.
Glad you liked the SpockPrime scene! It took me ages to tackle and I'm still not completely satisfied with it, so thanks for commenting on it :)))
