I swear, if I had to hear ONE more political ad, or get ONE more political mailer, or get awakened ONE more weekend morning by a pollworker... I'd go crazy!!
Luckily, what little is left of my sanity is intact, or so I like to think.
I have tried not to use this journal too much like a political forum like I have in the past, but there is something I would like to say.
I am one of those people who felt like I never had a candidate in this race. I think Obama is way too far left for my tastes, and I wasn't really a fan of McCain either. I don't mind that he was a 'reach across the aisle' sort, and in fact I encourage it. The problem, though, is that he has reached on all the WRONG issues, and folds like a house of cards in the face of political adversity (Bailout bill, anyone?), not to mention some of his other policies.
I wasn't even really enthused with my choices for Governor, but I disliked both of them less than I disliked either of the main presidential candidates. The democrat won in an unsurprising landslide, and I hope he really can do the things he has promised for jobs in this state. Gods know the State's economy can use all the help it can get even outside of what's going on nationally.
In the end, I voted third party. I have never been the kind of person to go with the 'lesser of two evils' and never looked forward to leaving a polling place and having to unplug my nose from the stench of what I HAD to do. I decided to go with what was closest to MY ideals and vote FOR something, not against something that I fear or dislike.
I know almost all of my friends voted for Obama, and I hope he brings in all of the goodness and light that many think he will bring to this country. I absolutely agree that we need change in this country, and I think the approval ratings, especially of the congress (which are consistently lower than those of President Bush) show just how upset people are with our government. However, I know that not all change is 'good' change, and that voting for change, just for the sake of change is rarely a good thing. There are many examples in history that tells us this, if we just pay attention.
Myself, I'm going to hope for the best but prepare for the worst. I truly hope that we have learned our lessons from history, and that the changes ahead are what we really need to bring this country back to not only being a great place to live, but also a good example to others and, more importantly, to ourselves as well.
