good morning.
This post comes to you directly from the Hampton Inn in Mesa, AZ. I am here designing a new show called Love Sweet Love, that will tour only a few cities in California through mid December. That doesn't seem like much of a tour to me, but they are paying me, and at one time, I thought it would all be fun, but it isn't anymore.
Actually, it might all turn out, but I have a really bad attitude about it. The original director was a good friend, who left because he thought the script was crap, and wanted out... And then the producer has cut my budget down and down and down, so now there just isn't that much that makes this design special in any way.
Hopefully I can post some photos of it as the week continues.
And now for the big news:
Last night was the Ovation Awards in Los Angeles, and I won the small theatre lighting design award for my design of Paradise Lost.
That's cool, huh? I am actually super happy about it, I liked that show a lot, and even though it was a total F&^SFing mess, it was real pretty when it was done. I kinda hope that they revive the show somewhere, or sometime in the future, it would be a shame if this great music was never heard again. Oh, and by the way, this show was the one that a lot of my friends chose not to see. I can understand it, I mean, I do a lot of shows, and that gets old after a while, but how are you ever to know what show is going to be a big breakaway hit?
Billy saw it, and loved it. I called from Mesa to tell him about it, and he said that he knew I would win, that he never had any doubt - it was a great design, and deserved it. Very sweet of him.
Clearly, I wasn't able to go to the awards show, but I did have my phone in hand, and at about 9:30ish local time, I got three text messages telling me that I had won. My friend Kenny sent a really lengthy text, and I love the idea of him sitting in his seat at the theatre, madly pounding out a text message DURING the show. How hilarious.
Oops, gotta run to the theatre now. More later?
