Sing Me A Lullaby

There wasn’t any way around it: Mei couldn’t sleep. While the trip from Xing to Resembool had tired her enough to send her to bed early the first night, time difference had now caught up with her. She had expected it to, but had not imagined that it would still keep her up at three in the morning. Relaxation techniques, reciting alchemy theories… Nothing had worked.

Not wanting to disturb Alphonse (oh he was sleeping all right), she had tiptoed out of their room and made her way down to the living room. She had grabbed the first book she could find (“Tips and Tricks To Baking Chocolate”, which sounded most interesting) and curled up on the couch to read. No point in trying to fight insomnia. She would only stress herself and sleep even less.

The house around her was entirely quiet. In fact, after the constant hustle and bustle of the Xingese capital, it felt as if the whole world around her were entirely quiet. The house seemed to breathe, slowly, deeply, as if it too were asleep.

Mei sighed, making herself more comfortable. It was good to be back in Amestris, to see Winry and Edward again. The Elric brothers had agreed to meet in Resembool to discuss their latest discoveries - it was more convenient, Alphonse had told her, halfway for both of them, but Mei was no fool: Ed and Al had simply missed each other and their home. But he had also asked her to go with him, and Mei wouldn’t have refused for the world.

Not with the way their relationship had progressed during Al’s time in Xing. Mei admitted she still had trouble separating the stern alkahestry teacher she was supposed to be from the affectionate girlfriend - if anything, Alphonse made it very hard to be stern at him for long, what with those huge puppy eyes. But now, away from the conservative court of the Xingese palace and its overzealous rumor-mill, she and Al were free to act as a couple and - the thought never failed to make her feel giddy - share a bed.

Footsteps on the stairs pulled her out of her reverie. Alphonse appeared, all tousled hair and very sleepy eyes. Positively adorable, in her opinion.

“What you doing here?” he mumbled.

She smiled at him. “I couldn’t sleep. Time difference… Oh, but did I wake you up?”

Alphonse shook his head as he made his way down the stairs. He paused a few feet from her, then looked at the door that led to the patients’ room. His eyes widened slightly as something occurred to him. Curiosity piqued, Mei watched him go into the room. She heard him rummaging through cabinets. A few seconds later, he emerged from the room, a blanket in hand. She looked at him questioningly but he only smiled and walked to the couch. He sat there and wrapped the blanket around them both, resting his head on her shoulder and snuggling up to her.

“What are you doing?” she asked, amused.

“Making the most of the situation. It’s not often we can do this without an entire palace gossiping about it. Wake me up when you feel like going back to bed.”

Blushing slightly, Mei giggled and wrapped an arm around him, her fingers running through his hair.

Alphonse was back asleep within minutes and Mei focused back on her book, not really worrying whether sleep would continue to elude her or not. Alphonse was warm and close, and - she giggled again - just too cute.
