Pennsic VL - middle Sunday

Aug 07, 2016 08:42

Sun Aug 7 08:04:42 EDT 2016

I woke at 06:00, but went back to sleep. With the earplugs still in I slept through my alarms at 07:30. But I'm not going to a 09:00 class, so I've got the time. ☺

Sunday 08:20

Laptop charge estimated(?) at 100%. (Maybe the estimate was remaining time to charge, because then it went to "unknown"?)

Sunday 09:34

I don't think I've mentioned yet that the new tent light has turned out to be excellent, perfectly suited to my purpose. The 2nd light in the camp shower is great too. On the low setting there's enough light to see what you're doing, and hanging high at the center of the tent it doesn't cast shadows on the tent walls.

I had some leftover stroganoff for breakfast, and I'll head off to rehearsal (with my instruments for the Collegium) early. I think there may still be a (very ripe) peach left; I'll take it to eat on the walk.

I set the laptop's auto-update to check every 2 weeks (instead of daily, since I don't have Internet access here), but it's pestering me again now. ☹

In particular we'll spend time on Missa Prolationum, and explain how the ingenious (or perhaps pedantic and unmusical) mensural canons work.

For the Beginner's Ball we teach all of the dances and everyone is welcome. No partner is needed. You are encouraged to bring your friends! The more the merrier!

There was no 09:00 class (in my filtered personal schedule) ending by 10:00. I could have gone to the first half of the Gathering of the Louds, but sleeping a little later and leaving camp without being in a rush was nice.

KWC was good, nothing suprising. Except the surprise of being tapped to lead the tenor sectional rehearsal tomorrow, since the bass section leader has a conflict teaching a class, and another tenor (with a lower voice than mine) and past KWC director will fill in for him.

The Mass Project again spent disapointingly little time on the Josquin mass, but we had only 4 people counting the instructor.

The Ockeghem class was interesting stuff for me. I didn't get there in time to get a handout, but at the end of the class someone didn't want to keep his. It's got some great stuff - a couple of facsimile pages from manuscripts, and modern transcriptions. One of the pieces we looked at is a mensural canon - there are 2 lines of music, but each has 2 clefs and 2 (what we would call) time signatures, so it's a 4-part piece. The pairs of parts are each cannons at the third, but not moving at the same speed. (Very cerebral stuff, these early composers playing games....) (Erin was there. ☺)

Korean Ceramics was interesting. It was probably the instructor's first class. She was nervous, and hard to hear. I intend to send her an encouraging email after I get home. Pennsic survives on volunteers, including the instructors, so it's in our interest to encourage them.

From Underwear to Gutenberg was my 2nd choice that hour; Erin went to it.

Sheath making was cancelled.

The Venetian carnivale masks were a great topic. The masks were not just part of Carnivale; they were worn much of the year, and triggered a lot of controversy and many laws to regulate them. They gave people anonymity, which left them open to flout many other restrictions, social and legal. (Erin was at this class too.)

Chorulus Pennsicus was good. We had some people we were lacking yesterday. The transposed double-chorus piece is doing weird things to my head. And some of the tuning is so amazingly good. This is perhaps better than sex.

Those of us in Chorulus got to Collegium Musicus late, but we had a good session reading more music. We may perform at the KWC concert Thursday, depending on who's available and interested. We'll work that out at the next rehearsal.

There's also another recorder ensemble forming, and I think it aims to perform at the concert too. But the other group is just recorders; the Collegium is hoping for strings and buzzies (reeds) as well. The 2 string players we had today (Master Aaron Drummond and Mistress Jadwiga Krzyzanowska - they're married (now); you may recall those names as instructors this week (and previous Pennsics)) are leaving Thursday, and not planning to stay late enough for the concert.

I took the Gypsy Personna class a couple of days ago, but I had to leave before the last 30 minutes. I thought I'd be able to catch the last 30 minutes this afternoon, but Collegium Musicus ran late. ☺ But I did still get to the last 30 minutes of the barber-surgeon class. I took that several years ago, and it's fascinating stuff (to me).

My right knee was hurting a bit last night, so I've been wearing knee braces today. They are noticeable sometimes under my tunic, but Erin was the only one who asked about them.

Being middle Sunday, tonight's dinner is Thanksgiving - i.e. a roasted turkey with all the trimmings. Caer Edgemere are like family, and this is when we're all together. Not everyone can be here all 2 weeks, but anyone who's coming is usually here by Sunday night.

Tonight is the Beginners' Ball, which I think I'll skip. Tomorrow night is the Choral Ball - a new thing - which will have a chorus with the band. Some dance tunes have words, so this will be a ball composed of such dances. I expect I will go back and forth between singing and playing in the band.

Sunday 21:40

Dinner was quite nice. Turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, sweet potatoes, sauerkraut.
I washed dishes afterward.

I need to go through the class schedule and pick out things for tomorrow. I'd gotten several days ahead, but those days have gone by now.

Sunday 23:20

I've been looking at my schedule for tomorrow. I need to take my recorders, the recorder-ensemble music, and the madrigal-jam music. Moll Sotherden's glass-fusing class is also tomorrow evening (one of my traditions, and she's always glad to see me), and the Debatable Consort choir, which I often try to record. So I need to take the Zoom H2, and probably the camera's tripod. I sorted through the flash cards and found one I took out of the H2, 16GB and only ¼ used. (Room for another 12 hours+ of recording.) And the batteries in the H2 were dead, so I had to grab another pair. (And I should probably have a spare pair along.) And reset the clock. I'm suddenly carrying a lot of stuff tomorrow. ☹

Tuesday the recorder ensemble and the Mass Project are scheduled at the same time. ☹ (And this is immediately after the Pilgrimage Project's walk, so I guess I won't be joining them for a beer afterward.) 2 weeks is not enough for Pennsic.

Monday 00:28

I have showered, and I'm ready for bed. Last night was definitely cooler than the previous nights, and it was chilly in the shower. (But not to the point that I dread going.)

I wish I had spent some time on the KWC music, to be more prepared for leading a sectional rehearsal tomorrow. I'll just have to wing it. I'm not always able to spot the things that are difficult for others anyway, since my abilities are different.

There's drumming going on down by the lake, and somebody(s) woodshedding a medieval tune on recorder(s). And people just roving about and screaming - general partying. Earplugs again tonight.
