I'm looking at a folder. I want to put the files' names in a document. 30 suggestions that don't match my question. Nothing there about file names. Why should this be so difficult?

And why can't I copy+paste that list of 30 suggestions into this document? What is it with Windows deciding when I can or can't copy text that I can plainly see?

The list turned out to be an HTML document. The window was a stealth browser. (Each line was a link; makes sense. Still not a real explanation, since a real browser would let you copy the displayed list.) I was able to "View Source" on the list, copy+paste that, and edit (vi) the list items out of the HTML source.
(Is the average user going to manage that? No: (s)he will do a screen capture, and get a picture of the list. That's a whole 'nother rant....
Don't ever give me a picture of my data. A graphical interpretation/representation/visualization, sure. But not a picture of the digits or text. Never.
Pictures of text take up way more space. They don't resize well/cleanly. They're hard to edit. And they can't be used as data.)

The next 30 results weren't any better, and that was the end.

Probably the easiest way to get what I want here is to open a command window, go to the directory, and get a listing. Text. Copy. Paste. Done. It will be faster than searching the web for some arcane combo-shift copy that does what I want but is not-at-all intuitive.

If I highlighted and copied, and pasted in a context where the files' contents didn't make sense, Linux would give me the file names. (Probably as full paths, which is not usually what I want, but I can edit down to what I'm after. And sometimes the full path is more useful.) And I'd go on about my business, satisfied.
