Another ambitious new bike tourer:Clueless on First Tour

Hi
Am new to this site and am looking for advice on my first tour.
I was thinking of a 3-4 weeks along the Mediterranean, starting from Valencia ES, to Nice FR.
Has to be in Europe. somewhere sunny, Great places to see and experience. Cheap, and easy accessible from England.
I can't understand why people assume they will enjoy a month on their bike every day.
Why it doesn't seem like a good idea to do some short trips close to home first to find out what they need to bring along, and what they thought would be useful that turns out to be dead weight. Do a trip from home, without the complication of packing and shipping the bike.
It would be a shame to be hundreds of miles from home and discover you don't enjoy spending the whole day on a bike and your ticket home is on a flight in 2 weeks at an airport 500 miles away. (Valencia to Nice is 1070km, 665mi.)
