International flight (Atlantic) baggage fees for transporting boxed bicyclesBy Joe Trudo (C2Cin2006_63) on Sun 9 Jan 2011 21:39
Does anybody have any information on 2011 Airline international flight bike baggage fees?
I paid $300 each way on Delta in 2009 for Pittsburgh-Venice-Pittsburgh carriage of my boxed bike (cardboard original factory to bike shop box) weighing under 50 lbs.
My first thought is "Who would want a bicycle in Venice?"
Of course, the countryside around Venice is probably great for cycling. I recall it being very flat, and there's probably not a lot of traffic.
Airline fees for carrying bikes are a hot topic on the site. The rules vary widely from airline to airline (often differing for domestic and international within an airline), some of the rules don't make much sense (why are bicycles not considered "sporting equipment"?), and many of the staff don't know (or understand) their airline's rules. The rules may change between booking and travel; the booking-time rules generally apply. (But may not be known by the counter staff.) So the rules are applied inconsistently. Arguments ensue at the counters. Some staff refuse to admit when they are wrong. (Some customers refuse to admit when they are wrong.) Things escalate.
People shop for low fares online, and these added baggage costs don't show up until they are at the counter checking in. An additional $300 each way would spoil many people's vacations. Similar problems can happen on trains and buses. AMTRAK allows bikes only on certain trains, and loading/unloading only at certain stations.
One reply on the thread mentioned that for $600 the bike frame could be
converted to disassemble to fit in a regulation-size suitcase. The bike would certainly weigh under 50 pounds (22.68kg), at which point all you might be facing is the charge for an extra bag. (If you're traveling light, you could fill up that 50 pounds with clothes, etc.) That leaves the questions of how to store the suitcase while you're riding, and how to move the suitcase if your ride is not a loop.
I'm looking forward to having a folding bike.... ☺
