teens on the road

Sep 18, 2014 12:00

Thu Sep 18 12:00:51 EDT 2014A SUV full of teenagers crashed in Idaho after one of the passengers lit the driver's armpit hair on fire with a lighter....

All five young people in the Ford Bronco were hurt in the crash Sunday and received medical treatment.... Two of the passengers, ages 15 and 16, were thrown from the vehicle, but none of the five suffered life-threatening injuries.

Deputies cited [18-year-old Tristian] Myers with inattentive driving, while the 16-year-old [front-seat passenger] was cited for interfering with the driver's safety.
Deputies also said none of the teens was wearing a seatbelt....
"Inattentive driving"? I keep my attention on the road and the other vehicles, not on my passengers. But I seldom had passengers when I was a teen, since I didn't have my own car. And teen passengers later didn't happen much either. (There probably wasn't any other traffic at 05:30 on a Sunday.)

I'm going to assume at least one of these kids smoked, because that's the typical reason to have a source of fire handy. And smoking is another sign of stupid.

Not wearing seat belts - also stupid. Being thrown out of a roll-over is much more dangerous than staying inside.

There is just so much stupid in this story. But that's what being a teenager is about.
Some states do not allow young teens to drive with other teens in the car unless there's an adult present, but that's generally for drivers younger than 18. Other teens - who are equally bad/inexperienced drivers - are likely to be a distraction. This certainly supports that assumption.
