The "500GB" disk in my new laptop is really only 465.76GB, when using the computerists K=1024 number system. (I'm really angry that disk manufacturers have redefined KB/MB/GB/TB as powers of 10 instead of powers of 2, and I'm angry that we've let the industry get away with it.) Out of that, there's a 12.7GB Recovery Partition and a 100MB SYSTEM RESERVED partition. 452.97GB left for ACER (C:), with 429GB available. I'll shrink that partition to get space to make partitions for installing Linux.
anniemal's laptop: "250GB" disk is 232.88GB, with 9.77GB Lenovo_Recovery, 1.17GB SYSTEM_DRV, and 221.95GB Windows7_OS (C:), 191.67GB available. I had been thinking of spliting her disk 50/50 Windows/Linux. That doesn't leave a lot of space either way, but she had used relatively little of the "80GB" disk in her iBook. She just never has saved a lot to disk, besides accumulating email. (She really should start an audio-digitizing project with her old cassettes, though.)
morg002The install of MythBuntu takes up only 4GB, but I don't know how much more software would be installed with a more general-purpose Linux install. I guess I'll find out when I do my install....
I'd rather have vendors provide the recovery software on DVDs/CDs. Putting it in a hidden partition on the internal disk will be useless if that disk is the component that fails. And I'd rather have that disk space for my own data.Windows Help and Support:
Where should I save my backup?
# You should also never back up files on the same drive that Windows is installed on, because if your computer gets a virus or has a software failure, you might have to reformat the drive and reinstall Windows to recover from the problem and then you would lose your backup data.
Then why do the vendors all sell the systems with the recovery software installed that way?# Internal hard drives are more secure than other media because they aren't being moved around, which makes it less likely that they will crash or become damaged.
Are you not aware that you sold me a laptop, and it will be moved around?# We recommend that you use an external hard drive that holds at least 200 GB.
These 2 laptops have "500GB" and "250GB" disks. How big were the drives in your systems when you people wrote that?# You can only save your backups on a network location on Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, and Windows 7 Enterprise.
Why do you sell OS versions with some means of backup disabled? This is not in the interests of the user/consumer.
on dual booting:
Most operating systems automatically, during install, check for other currently existing operating systems. They then add the existing ones into a boot-menu along with the new one so that you can choose which OS to boot into. Windows does not but it is the exception. It is really only Windows that ignores anything currently on your system....
