I had 2 meetings on line this morning. The 2nd was missing a key person (busy with some emergency), so it lasted only 15 minutes. But these meetings happened. In contrast to the meetings I'd set alarms for and got up early for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
Thursday 21:00
77°F/25°C going to work today, and 76°F/24.4°C coming home tonight. After the 2 meetings this morning, I had another this afternoon. I'd planned to go to the office after the 2nd meeting, but it was raining. The rain stopped after the 3rd meeting and I went to the office. It was almost sunny when I got to work. But there was still a cold front coming our way:
Record-setting chill grips Rockies as Denver sees snowiest October in a decade96-year-old snowfall record smashed in Chicago as Halloween storm sweeps across USNortheastern US braces for storm that may seem like a hurricane for a timeSo I left work early to beat the rain. I had gusty tailwinds (stronger than the headwinds on the way to work). I saw lightning ahead of me, so the thunderstorms in the forecast were real.
I heard a "boomf" in the Cherrydale neighborhood and the traffic signals went dark in the intersection I was crossing. There were more boomfs and flashes from about a block over, so it was probably wind related rather than lightning. A few blocks farther on there were traffic signals and street lights out. That seemed to be just a small area. Our power was on at home, but
anniemal said there had been some dips.
I did beat the rain. Some of my clothes were still damp from riding home in the rain Wednesday night. But tonight was so warm that I didn't need those layers.
Saturday 03:17
I'm at the office. My phone says it's 36°F/2.2°C outside. That's about 10°F/5.6°C colder than I was expecting tonight. It was 76°F/24.4°C when I got home last night. I got home earlier than usual last night to outrace some severe weather (rain and high winds). But the time-of-day difference is nowhere close to accounting for this kind of change. I'm glad I grabbed a headband to cover my ears. My gloves will be marginal, and my feet will probably get cold. My jacket is probably OK, and I have long tights - somehow legs seem to be the least bothered by cold.
Ah, clever self - I grabbed the pair of Gore-Tex oversocks. Those will block the wind through my well-ventilated shoes.
Saturday 05:50
That 36°F/2.2°C reported by the phone was probably for Arlington, not DC. The bike was at 76°F/24.4°C in the parking garage, and dropped to 44°F/6.7°C going through DC (past Union Station, the hockey arena, and the White House). The temperature continued to drop going west, and a 5°F/2.8°C drop leaving Georgetown onto the
Capital Crescent Trail isn't unusual - any time of year. Going out the
C&O Canal towpath the temperature dropped to 34°F/1.1°C, 33°F/0.6°C across
Chain Bridge over the Potomac River, and 32°F/0°C up the hill on the Virginia side of the river; that held for the rest of my ride home. Cars had frost on the windshields.
It was 76°F/24.4°C - T-shirts and shorts weather - the night before when I rode home. Now it's literally freezing.
