ad blocking: the next generation

Websites have ads. Boo!
Web browers (or proxies) have ad blockers. Yea!
Some web sites have noticed that the ads are being blocked. Some sites won't deliver content if the ads are blocked. Boo!

When do we see the next round of ad blocking? A blocker that accepts the ad data, but doesn't display the ad on the screen (or play the audio/video/etc)? It doesn't have the full benefit of freeing up my bandwidth, and my pages won't load as fast (because I'm still receiving all the crap), but it would still have the advantage of saving me from seeing/hearing the ads - many of which are annoying or distracting.

Just as the ad blockers now have lists of (ad-serving) URLs and IPs from which to block all traffic, they'd also need a list of (content-serving) URLs for which they should flush the (ad-content) data stream instead of blocking it.

If I want to buy something, I'll go looking for it. I don't need people telling me I need to buy whatever it happens to be that they sell. I don't want people compiling data about what they think I want.
