Darfur: May 17th, "With Darfur's remaining rebels still refusing to sign a peace deal, fighters that were united against the Sudanese government have turned on each other...In what has become a turf war for control of rebel-held territory, gunmen on pick-up trucks and horseback have been burning huts, killing, looting, and even raping women, in raids just as deadly as those of the Arab "Janjaweed" militia."
Haiti: "The shaky peace that has held since February's election was shattered two days ago by a shanty town bloodbath of men, women and children...The body count totalled 21, including three women and four children. Most of the victims were killed with a bullet to the head."
Sri Lanka (galang galang galang): "The Tamil rebels' former military leader is driving the Sri Lankan minority into a civil war...a bloody, sectarian war fought in the streets of this town between government-backed Tamil fighters, led by a breakaway Tiger commander called Karuna, and battle-hardened guerrillas from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). Although these rivals were once on the same side, fighting the Sri Lankan army for 20 years in a conflict that has claimed 65,000 lives, they are now sworn enemies. Little quarter is asked for or given."
India: "The bomb attacks today against civilian targets in Mumbai should be investigated and the perpetrators should be prosecuted, Human Rights Watch said today. Seven bombs are reported to have hit the city's commuter rail network during rush hour on Tuesday evening, killing more than 100 people and wounding hundreds more."
Mexico: "Over the past 13 years, more than 400 women have been murdered or “disappeared” in Ciudad Juבrez. In a number of these cases, the women had been mutilated or severely beaten before they were killed. Some had even had their nipples cut off, or their torsos were dismembered."
Alaska: "The warhead of a long-range missile test-fired by North Korea was found in the U.S. state of Alaska, a report to the National Assembly revealed yesterday."
