All media, including the indymedia has an agenda. The capitalist econosphere has evolved to the point of being able to co-opt any and all information constructs, and to comodify all novel ideas, including activism, environmentalism etc. This does not mean, however, that those involved in establishing or contributing to alternative news/media are involved in a task with no merit. The important thing, I think, is to recognize that all information which is dispersed via any medium is exactly that, "mediated". It is not information that originates within oneself, but from without, and being thus, it can act as a meme which may or may not insinuate its way into the consciousness of the receiver. It all depends on the interaction of numerous factors.
Up here in Soviet Canuckistan, our comedians have been taking aim at Bush with decreasing degrees of cautiousness as the months roll by. You should see some of the stuff they come up with on This Hour Has 22 Minutes. If anyone had offered up such irreverant views prior to the invasion of Iraq, there would have been an uproar, and possibly some form of retribution. The fact still stands though; we are all complicit as our apathy and powerlessness has made us shy away from meaningful action.
Don't you just wish it would all go away?
The greatest irony is that as media proliferates, the content is diminishing to the point of absurdity. More channels for the corporate careerists to plunder the pockets and souls of the masses. I have found some comfort in reading online news sources, but in the end, do I really gain anything valuable, or am I just driving the wedge deeper between myself and the overarching ideology of my community, my city, my country, my world? Idealism is seen as weakness in the boardroom, and the boardroom is where control originates. It's probably more rewarding to read one person's view, and to feel a connection, than it is to try and absorb the brimming can of worms which is the "whole" truth about anything, whether it be political corruption, corporate greed, or philosophical perspectives. My greatest sense of shared views comes from a couple of small press papers which deal with local issues, and often when I'm reading them I feel a great sense of relief that I am in fact, "not alone".
The Current Ideology is Power
By the same logic, success is the current morality. Without power and success, you do not exist in the mediated world of informational values. This is creating an identity crisis among the faltering members of so called "western democracies", and all of our valuing systems have become obsolete. You've probably heard the term "history has ended", and in a sense, this is true. One history has ended, and another has begun. Don't feel too special though. It's not the first time this has happened to humanity.
So, does being in the know, being informed, knowing the truth change anything really. Does the murderous individual care what the truth is, or do they only care for power. I think we all know the answer.
We live as we dream-alone! Only within yourself can you find your truth. Don't let the bastard's grind you down!
Love one another, despite what the media tells you. This is the most subversive act ever known to humankind, more powerful than protest, more potent than bombs, more enriching than greatest treasure.
and the world becomes.....Disneyland.....a simulation.
