Winter CSA

Well, I haven't exactly been blogging my life in minute detail lately. (Had a kid 8 months ago. She's great.)

But Z and I joined a winter CSA this year, and I want to write down what we do with all these veggies, so here we are:

This is the Belmont Farms Winter CSA, which is done as a joint effort with Picadilly Farm and Vanguarden CSA. There are three distributions in total: one was today, the other two will be in December and January. Today's distribution was estimated at about 40 lbs. We weren't sure if we were going to be able to get through 40 lbs of winter vegetables in a month, but now that we've seen the share, we're optimistic.

The share pickup was quite sane - I had envisioned all 120 members descending on tiny Belmont Farm at once, but no.

The newsletter mentioned "Ah, the turnips. We hope you like turnips," so we expected to be inundated with them. Total inundation: two turnips. Well, okay. Lots of squash, though: delicata, carnival, acorn and butternut. And, um, a bunch of other stuff.

First CSA snack: a darn good carrot.
First CSA meal tonight: oven-roasted potatoes and brussels sprouts. Accompanying lemon chicken, which may have included some CSA onions, I'm not sure. All good.

Off to a promising start. Who knows, maybe if this goes well we'll yield to the temptation to join a summer CSA next year.
