HER: Yeah, my grandma got Old Timers, a bad and really contagious disease. (Commences long story about grandmother's hospital stay, which was apparently violent, but fortunately short-lived, and not too interesting.)
THE OTHER HER: Uhh, this is the second time you did that. It's called ALZHEIMER'S.
HER: Ohhh...
FORMER XCOUNTRY COACH: How's track, Henry?
ME: Pretty good, but I think I'll start running a couple extra miles after school.
FORMER XCOUNTRY COACH: Have you told your coaches?
ME: No. Should I?
FORMER XCOUNTRY COACH: Yes, (BIG, math-teacherly wink, sufficing to say in one gesture, "Show that coach xcountry runners are tougher than what he can dish out!" It was really rather disturbing.) That would be a good idea, Henry.
I'm not sure how much extra work my mind and body can take out of all of this, but I suppose I'll find my limit if it's not here yet. Last thing to say, and I promise I'll leave you all be. My mother is in Florida, having a great time, leaving dad as the standing mother. That can be pretty cool, but it's getting annoying, because no matter what I do, he just talks to me in order to put me down, whether jokingly or not. It seems like nothing I can do will please him or make him even slightly proud. Anything I do that's worthwhile is EXPECTED of me, but any character flaw or mistake he sees in me, it's SMACK, right where it hurts. Hard to deal with when he's the only parent around. Sorry to complain.Henry
