Yesterday I went to Effingham and to grandma's and granpda's, for grandpa's 80th birthday. Now, when I say 80, many of you may think of a decrepid old man, incapable of thinking about anything more complex than the location of his bathroom. However, I am very proud of the fact that for my grandfather, the exact opposite is true. Grandpa joins in intelligently with us in our conversations on particle and astro physics, and I still constantly learn new things from him. Anyway, today I took another look at the family bible from Germany, pretty much the family heirloom. The bible was made in 1726, before America, before Napoleon, before the partition of Africa. The pages are made in the old way, so they don't rot away like most books of modern times. It was incredible to hold in my hands something that has been in my ancestors' poccession for at least 278 years. The book is printed in high German (what all Germans speak in Germany now, though some still also know low German) and I hope to be able to read from it when I have completed four years of high school German.Henry
