a snapshot of the weekend: a film, emo, etc.

I am feeling very emotional and completely moved right now. We saw Brokeback Mountain earlier this evening, and the human emotions and vulnerabilities shown in the film were beyond incredible and intense. I have thousands of thoughts and feelings that are being stirred up inside right now. Brokeback Mountain is an incredible film.

The holiday dinner last night was very enjoyable. It was an alien-themed dinner party, and there were some tasty and delectable out-of-the-world dishes served. The pleasant music choice included the likes of Gary Numan, Ian McCulloch (hey, someone else remembers his great solo albums from the early 1990s!), and the ever-omnipresent The Magnetic Fields. We wound up watching episodes of Kids In The Hall (I *finally* got to see the legendary "Girl Drink Drunk" and "29 Helens Agree" episodes!) and an episode from the original Star Trek series (Scully recently acquired the first DVD box set of the first season). I was also very pleasantly surprised after receiving a holiday gift from Scully--the tantalizing book, Pad: The Guide to Ultra-Living, by Matt Maranian. I've been piqued by that book for the past few months. Wow.

I bought several CDs earlier today. I picked up The The's 45 RPM compilation--I wanted to get their Soul Mining album, but I was unable to find it at Everyday Music. I also scored Thomas Dolby's The Gate To The Mind's Eye album, as well as my first-ever The Magnetic Fields album (69 Love Songs, Vol. 1). I can't believe that I have lived this long without owning any albums by The Magnetic Fields! I think I can now qualify for an Emo Membership Card or something (I *knew* there is a reason why there is "mo" in "emo"). There is something very alluring about the dreaminess and the bitterness of the pop love songs of The Magnetic Fields--I've always liked the simple-yet-heartfelt vulnerability in the lyrics of Stephin Merritt. I suppose I am on my way to becoming a bitter and jaded emo person. :o

I'm in a mood for a Girl Drink (I'd like a glass of Chocolate Choo Choo....), but I think I'll settle for a glass of Japanese plum wine (umeshu) before calling it a night.
