So, I'm always fascinated by people who somehow manage to develop the ultimate online advertising gimmick*. Take one helping of "cute!", add a few dashes of "have to keep up with it", and sprinkle liberally with "addictive." Then, add advertising. The users/players keep coming back, the unique views/clicks/views keep going up, and the owners rake in the cash. Brilliant.
This is a great way to monetize things like the whole
tamagotchi craze. Those things were a fad, but during the time, they were completely addicting. Damn, I wish I'd thought of it. Of course, this is also similar to the whole collectible card game thing in terms of having to collect them all. I think I'm going to go check out how they monetize their online presence.
t1tdave's daughter was telling me that she could go online and register beanie babies now. There's gotta be ads there.
Anyways, I've never had a tamagotchi (or the spin-offs, like the tamagothi), but I want to try this and see what's so fascinating about it. So here's my first egg. Er, make with the clickey or something**.
* I don't mean that things that have a gimmick are all bad. It can be something really fun or informative or educational that they're also presenting. But since they're using that to generate traffic to fund advertising revenue, it seems a bit gimmicky.
** Remember, it's for science.
