Dear Mum and Dad,
I know you received an owl from Professor McGonagall the other day about my marks. I'm very sorry that I've done so poorly this term so far. My new classes are more difficult than I'd imagined, and my new professors aren't as understanding of my absences. Potions is much harder this term, too, and our last assignment involved some brewing at the the lunar eclipse last week, and obveus obviously I couldn't complete it.
I know you don't want excuses - you want results...but I just wanted you to know that I am trying my best. Sirius will help me with Potions, and James is ace at Transfiguration, and Peter is excellent at quizzing me on DADA Defence hexes, and Lily (she's that pretty redhead who said hi at the platform a few months back) is one of the top students in Charms. So my mates are looking out for me and I promise to work really hard and prove to Professor Dumbledore that he did the right thing by letting me come here.
