I would not call this a nightmare per se, but it was damned odd. I woke up at "i should be in REM " o'clock in the morning to find something that resembled a spheroid sea anemone made of animate, smoky darkness floating a foot or so from my bed. It startled me so badly I barked, "whoa" and I woke up. The thing hung there for a moment before fading.

Maybe that moment was me waking up?
