One of the things that being at school is confusing me is the use of Miss and Sir when teachers talk to each other in front of kids (or otherwise). I've been finding it a bit weird and finding it difficult to use and I've been trying to understand why. Then it occurred to me that, as I socialise a lot with trans and gender variant people, it's the height of bad manners to gender anyone before I can know what gender they want to be called, and the same with sex. Even more so, it's worth deferring using any gender and sex signifiers for as long as possible to for me to work out what they want to be called if they won't tell me themselves.
I'm not really sure how to get around that problem, or whether to get around the problem at all. The vast majority of people are probably cissexual and cisgender, so it's probably a non issue. I still can't help but wince at it though.
