Eurovision

I haven't had time to make a Eurovision post. This year's contest was pretty varied. There was no stand-out winner, but there were a lot of good songs, as well as some bad ones and some random ones. This is my run-down of the year's songs according to categories I've made up.

Most catchy but awful song:

Greece - Aphrodisiac: "you make me dance, like a maniac/ you make want your aph-rho-dee-zee-ack!"

Most Rocking Tune:

FYR Macedonia - Black and White: It starts quiet, but this is an awesome rock song.

Most cringe-worthy lyrics:

Turkey - Love Me Back: "I am a lonely sailor/ drinking the night away / My ship is made from hope/ she's searching for your bay". My thought was, and you'll be bloody lucky if you ever find it. Ick, ick, ick. Enough with the tacky nautical metaphors for sex, love and everything, really.

Most random and fun song:

Russia - Party for everyone: The most random song is definitely the Russian babushki. They are awesome, and so sweet. They're trying to rebuild their church after Stalin tore it down. How cute is that? And it's such a happy bouncy song, especially if you look at the translation.

Vote for me because I'm sexy award:

Cyprus - La la love: Wait until she and those dancers really get going. Good group dance, although a little dripping on the sex appeal. I'm not sure you're meant to be thinking much about the song at that point, which is a shame because it's catchy and not too bad.
Estonia - Kuula: Look at those eyes. Smouldering, aren't they? It was a lovely ballad too.

The WTF Award:

So much to choose from. There's the Social Networking Song from San Marino, Austria's entry, which may also just be an attempt to swear lots on stage as well as a song and the entry from Georgia, which if you were playing the drinking game with the rule of drinking every key/tempo change, would single handedly put you under the table. But Albania just has to win this one for the excruciatingly painful but extremely well sung Suus with the random costume. It deservedly got through to the final.

Weirdest English Translation:

Moldovia - Lautar: "You have never been to my show/ you haven't seen before / how looks that trumpet" Eh?

Nicest song that didn't get through the semi-finals:

Finland - Nar jag blundar: I liked it, and I thought it was a shame it didn't get through. It's lovely and lilting.

Honourable mention:

Ukraine - Guest: A really fun dancy track with good use of screens and trumpets. If it wasn't for the winner, this would have been the best dance and visual display, although it was never in the running. It's impossible to sit through this one. Not sure what the guys in skirts was all about, though.

Winner of Eurovision:

Sweeden - Euphoria: This is a great trance/dance track, and the staging was deceptively simple but unique. They focused only on the singer, cast strong light so she was permanently in dramatic shadow, lots of wind machine and just focused on her ephemeral, almost dreamlike dancing, then added another dancer at the end who was fantastically martial. Worked brilliantly on television.
