Well, as people know, I started trying to fix computers to earn a bit of money. The people for whom I did the work for seem pleased, and have since then either asked for more work or passed on my details to someone else, who has given me more work. The net effect is that my work is threatening to bloom into small business territory ( Read more... )

Hmm, tax. It's been at the back of my mind that it might be a good idea to think about it when I have some spare time. I think that I don't have to worry about it yet as I'm not making remotely enough money (and I pay VAT on the goods I buy), and one friendly person who runs their own business would have probably mentioned it to me if it was relevant.

Thanks. I'm well aware of how ruthless the tax office can be. They taxed my dad for making a loss, simply because he couldn't prove he had. :s

It seems to me that you need to have a think - do you want this to become a line of business, or are you happy for it to be a little sideline for friends? If the second, then if it's becoming busy enough to cause trouble then you need to say no to jobs occaisonally. If the first, you need to do some maths and make sure you're making money on each job.
